    Buying and Selling Domains

I've been reading more and more about this new trend in making money online...Buying and selling domain names. I never gave it much thought, but can now imagine how profitable that could be to sell a coveted name. For example, on GoDaddy.com, there's a domain called clicksurance.com that's on sale for $49,999. There aren't any bids on that domain, however. I wonder how they justify that price?

I read in a magazine that people are buying expired domains that get some traffic, refurbishing the website, and have made the website into a money-maker. Similar to buying and fixing up real estate.

I'm still doing more research on this new way to make money online. Anybody out there have experience with this?

Here's an article I came across that explains buying and selling domains in detail...

Good Web Design Is So Important

    by Tawnya Swithins

The utter importance of good design is difficult to overstate. Design can and will make or break a website. While this little fact may seem self-evident to many people, it is a surprisingly easy fact to overlook, especially at a time when free web design software or templates are available to anyone with passing interest. Such tools are great for encouraging more people to use the Internet and develop new skills, however, if you are looking to establish a 'serious' presence for you or your organization you will be best served by finding someone with the education, tools, and talent that go into good design.

The look and feel of your website is a reflection of your entire business. The more professional your website navigates, reads, and looks, the more professional your organization will appear to the person doing the navigating, reading, and looking. If the navigation is needlessly confusing, the look'off' or immature, or the content lousy, the conversion from visitor to customer is far less likely to take place.

There is an abundance of literature on the web regarding what constitutes good design, and why good design is so important. An excellent place to go, however, for views and information on good web design is to the designers themselves. Online forums are not good for everything, but web designers use them a lot,and much of what follows on good design is based upon forum posts from web designers on just this topic. One web designer pointed out that it takes around 50 milliseconds for a visitor to decide whether or not they like a website. This seems like a rather short amount of time, and it is. However, it does not seem so far fetched when we consider our own viewing and browsing habits. Generally, we know the information, service, or product we seek; the more obviously, reliably, and aesthetically these can be delivered the more likely we are to use the website accessed instead of searching for another, 'better' one.

With so many websites popping up on any Google search most of us maintain a low threshold for abandoning a particular website for another, potentially better one, down the list. In other words, good design means good first impressions. The longer the colors, format, content, structure, etc. can keep a visitor at the website, the better your chances that they will find what they need, buy, bookmark, or come back. Another web designer put it like this, "Presenting the right information to your audience in an easy to find, read and understandable fashion so that they can find what they need fast." Good design is important because it not only gives your website a better chance of success, but also because it makes life so much easier and pleasant for those of us who spend any amount of time on the web.

It should also be said that good design is not simply a functional characteristic toward which one should strive. The design says something about your organizations attitude and image. "Design", as one designer put it, "is what articulates your marketing message." In other words, the relationship between marketing and design is similar to that of thought and message. A marketing plan is impotent until implemented through design. Regardless of the quality of your product or service, it is the design which first must communicate the value of the product or service in question to the consumer. These are but the main reasons good design is so important;there are more. When setting about to put your presence on the web take some time and find a designer or design that is'right' for you. While good design is important, it is also important to remember that what constitutes 'good design' is relative. Each company and organization must cultivate and project its own unique brand and image. In general, good web design is able to do this in original and functional ways that translate a website's image into a company's success.

You Must Be Remarkable to Succeed Online

I've been reading quite a few business books lately - one being Getting Rich Your Own Way by Brian Tracy, and the other is Customers.com: How to Create a Profitable Business Strategy for the Internet and Beyond by Patricia B. Seybold. What I'm learning is that in order to succeed in any business, you must be remarkable. You must be unique and you must be able to wow your customers. With so much competition out there on the internet these days, it can be quite overwhelming for people to try and decide who to buy from. Who can they trust? Who's going to answer their emails if they have a question? And who is genuinely concerned about trying to help them?

So, if you're wanting to start your own online business, I suggest that you sit down and really think about how you're going to make yourself stand out from the other million people who are probably doing what you want to do. What are you going to do to make them customers for life? It's much harder to get and sell to new customers, so when you do finally build up your clientele, what are you going to offer them so that they don't run off and buy from the competition?

Before You Start That Online Business...

Passion is a word that seems to be coming up lately in my life. I talked about it the other day at CustomersAreAlways and I'm beginning to learn that it IS passion for your work that keeps you going throughout the day.

As I sit here wondering how I could possibly maintain eight blogs and two websites, I think about the passion that I have for the subject of each website and my sincere passion for wanting people to be successful, especially if they want to start an online business.

Darren Rowse of ProBlogger has a great post about three factors you should consider before you start a blog, but I think that his advice can be carried over to starting an online business as well. #2 is "Energy Levels"... Do you have the energy to even start a business? Does what you have to offer excite you and are motivated enough to stick around for the long haul?

I've said it here before, but I'll say it again. When deciding what type of business to go into, you don't want to do something simply because you're going to make alot of money from doing it. You'll soon be tired of the money (well, maybe!) and then what?

So, sit down and really ponder what drives you and gets you excited. Ten years from now do you think you'll still be excited about it? If so, that's your passion...

Make Money BECAUSE Of Your Blog

Darren over at ProBlogger talks about how Seth Godin makes money without spending any money in advertising. I, too, don’t spend any money on advertising. I simply blog about what I’m passionate about, create and build online relationships with other bloggers, participate in online discussions, and watch my traffic roll in. Factor in SEO knowledge and you’ve got a recipe for success!

Of course, it’s taken some time to get to this level that I’m at right now. What I don’t spend in money, I spend in time - which I don’t mind doing. What else is there to do?

Anyhow, Darren attributes Seth’s success to his strategy of giving away useful information. People subscribe to Seth’s blog because he provides valuable content. Readers get to know him better and therefore have no problem supporting him by buying his books (which are great reads, by the way!)

    Ultimate Small Business Marketing

John Jantsch of Duct Tape Marketing offers this tip for us:

"Measure and test, measure and refine, measure and tweak, but don't jump ship until your testing proves beyond the shadow of a doubt that you have a new winner."

It's important to test your marketing initiatives to see what is and what is not working for your business. You can't just put an ad out there and expect people to come running to you begging for your product. Believe me, I probably know this better than most people :) I used to put ads all over the internet thinking, "Well, the search engines will pick them up". I've learned that you need some type of marketing system to succeed online. You need a plan for success!

John has put out a report called 7 steps to creating the Ultimate Small Business Marketing System. You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view it:

    Staying Focused While Online

I used to be an internet junkie.... Well, I still am a little, but I'm quite a bit more focused now. :) My boyfriend, who spends very little time on the computer, asked me yesterday, "How do you stay focused?" Apparently whenever he logs on to the world wide web, he gets sidetracked easily and next thing you know he's nowhere close to where he was or wanted to do.

It is quite a challenge to stay focused online. There is a plethora of information out there and being the information seeker that I am, I try to soak up as much as I can and learn as much as I can. However, with the number of projects increasing and there only 24 hours in a day, I've learned how to manage my time wisely and not "click" around like a chicken with my head cut off!

    How do I do this?

    1) Create a list of things to do while on the internet. Having a list by the computer keeps you on track. I look at my list about every 30 minutes, cross off what I did, and remind myself of what still needs to be done.

    2) If you come across a website that is interesting and you would like to read more, bookmark it for later. I used to find myself reading article after article... Next thing I knew two hours had gone by and I hadn't done the work I needed to do! Save the reading for after you've done your "to do" list.

    3) Set a block of time aside to check and answer emails.

These are the only tips I can think of right now... If you have any to share, feel free to add them via comments!

Why You Won't Make Money In Blogging

Darren Rowse of ProBlogger offers us his ten reasons why blogs don't make that much money:

1)Not enough time - it is hard work and takes time on an ongoing (daily ideally) basis
2)Giving Up too quickly - most successful blogs don’t hit their strides til they are at least 12 months old
3)Non commercial Topic - some topics are easier than others to find significant income streams for
4)Lack of writing skills - like it or not, blogging is a written form and unless you are able to write you’ll almost always struggle
    5) Breaking the Rules - some bloggers get greedy and break the rules, either of the ad programs they use or the unwritten rules of blogging
    6) Distractions for the core functions of a blog - many get caught up in one of the many distractions that challenge bloggers and forget to concentrate on their actual writing of quality content
    7) Unluckiness - sometimes a blog’s success hinges on a lucky moment - miss it or fail to take the opportunities that come and you might miss significant rewards
    8) Taking Readers for Granted - I’ve seen a couple of blogs over the last year or so that fell over because the blogger became so self important that they forgot that a blog rises and falls upon whether it’s readers find the blog useful to them.
    9) Spreading self too thinly - many bloggers have the gift of being visionaries (a good thing) but fail to have the gift of realism. The result is that many start things that they have no way of seeing through or spread themselves across too many projects too quickly (to the detriment of all of them).
    10) Lack of Focus - hyperactive bloggers who flit from one unfinished project or idea to another without seeing anything through tend to fail to build sustainable blogs

    My thoughts on this:

I've been blogging for about a year and a half and it's just now that I'm beginning to get traffic and bring in money through affiliate programs and such. I started blogging for the pure joy of publishing my thoughts and having a medium by which to express myself. I just loved writing, period. But I found that I could actually make money by blogging - by golly - I was all over that.

But first and foremost, you definitely need to have a passion for your writing and subject matter. Do what you love first and the money will follow. To sum up, I would say you need the five P's: Passion, Preparation, A Plan, Patience, and Perserverance.

Four Great Tips for Making Money on the Internet

    by Douglas Hanna

You can make money on the Internet, but you have to be patient. I'm convinced, based on my own personal experiences, that it's next to impossible to make money fast on the Web, yet alone overnight. However, there are things you can do that will just about guarantee you make money over time.

Tip #1: Find popular keywords. Yahoo has a great little, free tool called Yahoo Keyword Selector Tool. Open it up and type in a word or phrase, and you will be able to see, almost immediately, how many people searched on that term the previous month. Keep trying words and phrases until you hit one that shows at least 10,000 searches.

Tip #2: Build a site around that keyword (or phrase) or a related term but also be sure you think about the competition. For example, the phrase "credit repair" shows a total of more than 184,000 searches. However, you have to know there are lots of big companies competing for that term. So, look down the list of related words (sometimes called the long tail of marketing). Credit repair service, credit repair services and credit repair company show a combined total of nearly 20,000 searches. So building a web site around these keywords might mean less competition.

Tip #3: Content, content, content. The search engines like Google are becoming increasingly sophisticated in terms of finding sites that offer good, helpful content. You should probably build at least 20 pages of good content around your keywords before you even go live. Then keep building more and more pages of relevant content.

Tip #4: Sign up for Google Adsense. Once you get your site up and running, go to the Google site (www.google.com/adsense) and sign up for your free account. Google will review your site over the next few hours or days. If the company believes the site is honest and provides good content for your visitors, you will be approved and can start adding Adsense click-through ads to your site. You will then need to pick an Adsense format and size. Once you do, Google will display the snippet of HTML code you need for Adsense ads. Paste this code into your site's pages and shazam! Google ads will begin showing up on your site almost immediately. And every time one of your visitors clicks on one of these ads, you earn money.

You won't get rich quick, but if you follow these tips, you will make money. Naturally, the amount you make will depend on how hard you work and how smart you are about building a good Web site rich in content and geared to profitable keywords.

Here's a final good tip. If you're looking for a great place to vacation, choose Denver. Denver is unique in that it offers the best of two worlds -- the fun things to do and see that you find only in a big, sophisticated city, plus the breathtaking scenery, unforgettable vistas and amazing wildlife you find in our nearby Rocky Mountains. To learn more about the best Denver vacation, just go to Just go to http://www.best-denver-vacation.com

Douglas Hanna is a retired advertising and marketing executive. He has lived in the Denver area for nearly 35 years and is the author of more than 125 articles on Internet marketing, family finances and the city of Denver.

    Personalizing the Online Customer Experience

As an online business owner, I know the importance of creating a rapport with current and potential customers. You want to build a trusting relationship and address your customers by name. How can this be done if you have a huge customer base?

Mike Paetzold shows us how to do this with autoresponder software. An autoresponder is highly recommended when you have an online business. Mike tells us the benefit of personalizing our email messages to our customers:

"Personalizing your autoresponder messages will help to improve your response rate. Research has shown that emails that are personalized with the person’s first name are opened more often, and those people are generally more receptive to the contents of the email message. "

I would recommend Constant Contact as a way to build your email list. They allow you to personalize your email messages and the program is pretty simple to use.
