Tip On Ranking In the Search Engines

It's one thing to have a website, and there are literally millions of websites on the internet nowadays, but you can't just stop there. It takes time to get traffic to your site. They say that the more links that you get from other websites, the higher your ranking in the search engines.

But I can tell you that there is another way to get a higher ranking and drive more traffic to your website....

    It's simple...

Just update your website regularly. I don't mean twice a week - you have to update your website at least once a day. That's because search engines love websites that are fresh and updated. They love new content. You don't have to make any major changes, just tweak it here and there. And if you have a blog related to your website, that's even better. You can make a new post at the blog and direct people to your main website.

The key here is to update - and update often.

Is Your Web Site a Cash Cow or a Money Drain?

If you consider your web site a money pit, you are not alone. Quite a few business owners - coaches, consultants, professional organizers, virtual assistants - have told me that they have web sites because "everyone else has a web site", but they haven't gotten any business from their web site. None. Zero. Nada. Zip. Many of them have paid thousands of dollars to web designers to create the web sites for them, and than the web sites just sit there, gathering the proverbial Internet dust, and getting enormous traffic consisting of three to five unique visitors a month.

Your web site should not be languishing in one of the rarely visited corners of the Net. Instead, it should be working 24 hours, 7 days a week, 365 days a year getting leads and clients for your business. It should serve as marketing brochure and as your best salesperson (who incidentally never sleeps, and doesn't require either salary or commissions).

So how do you turn your dust collector into a lean, mean sales machine? First, you need to lay down the infrastructure for your online business. Here are three guidelines your web site should adhere to before its initial debut:

Your web site must be easy to navigate, understand and use. When a web surfer comes to a web site and doesn't understand what the web site is about in the first few minutes, the surfer moves on to the next web site (trust me, there lots of them out there. Approximately 2.7 billion at last count, give or take a few billion).

If the purpose and intent of your web site is not blatantly obvious, a surfer will move on. If your web site is difficult to navigate, a surfer will move on. If your web site is hard to use (for example, it is not obvious how to contact you or hire you) a surfer will move on.

Your web site must discuss what you do AND how what you do will benefit your customers. Let's say Sue and Jane are both weight loss coaches. Sue's web site says that Sue is a weight loss coach. Jane's web site says that Jane is a weight loss coach who helps women look and feel better by losing 30 pounds in 3 months.

Which coach sounds more appealing? The one who not only states what she does, but also shows what is in it for the customer. The site must answer a fundamental question: Why should I hire you?

Have a newsletter sign up box on your web site. The majority of your web site visitors will not contact you about your services after visiting your web site, but they will subscribe for a free newsletter. By subscribing, they give you permission to send them your information-packed newsletter, which will also serve as a reminder about your business.

Without a newsletter, many people will visit your web site once and promptly forget about it 10 minutes after leaving it. By having a newsletter, you are able to capture these visitors, and tell them about your business again and again.

Take action today! Take a critical look at your web site and make sure that it conforms to the guidelines outlined above. A website that follows these forms a solid foundation for having a marketable web site for your business.

    The Magic Word in Marketing

Since I've started my online saga I've signed up for numerous newsletters and joined even more affiliate programs only to be bombarded with hundreds of emails and solicitations to join or buy more money making programs. As I write this I'm dreading going through my 400+ emails - although I have been tempted to just delete all of them. But what keeps me hanging on to them?

It's that magic word: "free" I just don't want to miss out on anything free. You see, I've spent all these years promoting and marketing my site for "free". I've joined all kinds of free programs with the hope of making even more money. Granted, maybe I would have made more money had I paid for advertising, but wouldn't it be great to make my first million for "free"?

One thing I have learned doing business online, people do love that magic word! And if you want to entice people to your website, I suggest offering something for free :)

The In's & Out's of Having an Online Business

I'm sitting here at the computer with a stuffy nose and feeling overwhelmed by the work that I want to accomplish. Since starting an online business several years ago, I've come to realize that in essence, I work harder and more hours than I did when I worked for someone else!

However, I'm not complaining - I just want you to know that if you want to start an online business, be prepared to put in some work in the beginning!

On the other hand, you can work anytime you want and wear anything you want :) You also don't have a boss telling you what you should and shouldn't do...

About.com has a great page that gives you resources and articles on starting an online business:

Blogging Tips: Commenting and Marketing Your Online Business

I've recently been bombarded with spam comments on my blogs which, needless to say, is very annoying. Then there are the people who do trackbacks, but when I visit their blog, there wasn't any kind of reference or link back to my site!

Here are my tips for effectively commenting and providing trackbacks to other blogs:

Tip #1 - Leave comments that pertain to the topic at hand and add value to blog. Comments such as "Great blog! Visit mine: I_am_a_spammer.com" is just plain spam!

Tip #2 - If you're going to add a link within the comment, do it within reason and don't add too many URL's. Some website owners don't like for you to include your URL. Some won't post or will even delete your comment if you do.

Tip #3 - When leaving a trackback to your blog, make sure that you have referenced in your post the blog that you are trackbacking. It's simply bad blogging manners.

Tip #4 - Blog consistently. Search engines love fresh content!

By the way, Darren Rowse of ProBlogger has a series called "Blogging For Beginners" which can definitely help jumpstart your blogging campaign.

    Online Business Marketing Tip

Here's my marketing tip for the day...

You can generate free traffic to your site just by including keywords on your website or blog. However, the key is to update your website frequently - at least once per day.

So what are keywords? These are words that people use in search engines to find information or products that are related to your business. A great tool that I use to find out what words are popular is Overture's Tool. Just type in a phrase you'd like to search and it'll spit out all the related phrases that are frequently searched for.

Like I said, it's important to update your website frequently because search engines just love fresh new content....

Got anything to add to this? Submit your comments...thanks!

    "The Donald" Is Back

I'm very excited that The Apprentice is back in action. I'm a very loyal fan of the show because I learn something new every episode about how to do business with the "big dogs".

Having an online business - you don't really have to deal with people in person most of the time. This show has taught me how to interact with other business people, how to confront people, and how to take responsiblity for my own actions.

Despite the drama with Martha Stewart, I admire and respect Mr. Trump for all that he's done. He's definitely an inspiration to me!
